We currently have 36 rats in sanctuary care. Read more about them here. Of those, many have ongoing medical needs. Our most pressing needs are below:

  • New Arrivals: Sweater Weather and Snow Day arrived suddenly in early December from an emergency intake! Riley and Astoria were also recently transferred to the sanctuary due to Riley’s lifelong chronic upper respiratory issues.
  • Emergency Care: Sweater Weather needed emergency care when she arrived to the sanctuary, she presented with neurological symptoms, as well as being severely emaciated and dehydrated. Her emergency vet appt got her treatment for the suspected pituitary tumor as well as for her (more minor) respiratory symptoms.
  • Foster Updates: Zim recently had intensive care for severe pneumonia, but she is doing much better now and finally completely off oxygen and back with her rat buddies!
  • Recent and Upcoming Surgeries: Dottie had her spay 12/3 and needed some extra care after surgery but is doing well, and Hazel is up for a mass removal surgery on 12/5! Froggy was recently spayed, and we’re hoping to see some positive progress soon with her behavioral issues.
  • Chronic Care: Many of our residents are on long term medications due to control chronic medical issues (heart failure, respiratory disease, arthritis, HLD, etc.) and require medication refills and regular vet visits to monitor their conditions.
  • Spay Fund: Mel and Emma both had URI flareups that pushed their spay dates out until they’re feeling better, but now they are almost ready for their spay surgeries! We need to beef up our medical fund in anticipation of spays for our residents! Spays are some of the hardest things to fundraise for, but they are crucial to the health and wellbeing of our female residents. This is something we provide to every one of our ladies to protect them against reproductive diseases, mammary masses, pituitary tumors, and more!
